Carl “Chip” Hellmers has defended hospitals, long-term care facilities, doctors, and other individual healthcare providers for over 25 years. He has developed extensive experience in helping his clients navigate the uniquely personal nature of medical malpractice litigation, and he possesses the background necessary to advise clients on the best course of action for managing their litigation needs, whether it be dispute resolution or trial. Chip also handles medical staff credentialing proceedings arising under the HCQIA, defends healthcare providers before state licensing boards, and conducts pre-litigation investigations of adverse outcomes. Additionally, he has unique experience defending civil rights and deliberate indifference claims against medical professionals in the correctional environment, as well as defending other professionals, including insurance agents, architects, and engineers.
Due to the sensitive nature of professional liability claims, clients often seek Chip’s counsel before litigation begins in order to complete an investigation and evaluation of catastrophic injuries or adverse events. Professionals rely on his advice to manage the impact of claims on their practice. He collaborates closely with clients to formulate litigation strategies for trial or negotiation. Chip is dedicated to helping clients find innovative solutions to end litigation and regularly speaks to providers and healthcare professionals on current legal issues and risk management strategies.
A New Orleans native, Chip attended Jesuit High School and Loyola University. After completing his undergraduate degree at Loyola, he worked as a Claims Specialist for St. Paul Fire and Marine Insurance Company, handling medical malpractice and significant commercial claims.
